A lot of languages groups are missing that dental fricative (th in English) which makes it pretty common in English dialects affected by other languages. Or in people trying to learn English.

The Irish & Caribbean dialects contain a lot of similar pronunciations yet it gets missed.

one thing that i foud really odd - and it may just be a coincidence - is that both scousers and singaporeans say 'la' for exactly the same thing ie mate.

I think its our regular usage of 'mate' as well that causes the confusion but as others have said there are wide similarities between cockney and Aussie

To be fair there are a lot of similarities... funniest thing I ever saw was waiting in a queue in a diner and a family of Geordies spoke to the girl at the counter about putting their name on the waiting list... I had to go over and act as an interpreter... the girl would not have it that we were both from the same country... Ha Ha Ha!!!

To be fair the typical American's only exposure to a Londoner is either Dick Van Dyke (Mary Poppins) or Bob 'Oskins (Who Framed Roger rabbit)... so unless you are singing about a Jolly 'Oliday or shouting out `Where's that bleedin' Rabbit' then they are as clueless as us thing Joey Tribiani (Friends) is a New York accent ..... Charley, I have personal experience of this.
Whilst in Vegas and playing Black Jack an America couple started talking to me and asked where I was from and I said London. They proceeded to query 'I didn't realise London was in Australia'. Fucking stupid cunts.
